Via’s Multi-Modal Future

San Antonio is currently the largest metropolitan area in the nation to be served by a bus-only public transportation system. VIA seeks to move beyond buses to become a truly regional, multimodal transit agency, and the means to accomplish this will come through the Long Range Comprehensive Transportation Plan.

The Long Range Plan will provide a comprehensive transportation vision for the community. This plan will outline a network of integrated high-capacity transit corridors with a range of transit mode alternatives from bus service and bus rapid transit to light rail and modern streetcars.

The Long Range Plan is being advanced by an intensive public outreach effort called “SmartWaySA.” This process began in September 2009 with a series of workshops designed to introduce the Long Range Plan concept and to solicit input from the citizens. Then, in November 2009 and June 2010, VIA held a series of meetings across the city to gather additional input and to update the community on the plan’s progress.

In January 2011, another a round of open houses will be held to show where bus service improvements are planned and where high capacity transit systems like rail might work best.  These plans will impact how people get around so VIA encourages everyone to come to one of the open houses.
